This March, the Afton Food Pantry experienced the largest number of visitors in its history – likely due to the COVID crisis – and have since remained at a higher than average rate of visitors throughout the summer. Because of these kinds of numbers, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints donated 38,000lbs of packaged and shelf-stable food items to four of our local food banks that were stored at the Afton Readiness Center.
In addition to a $1000 donation earlier in the year that Silver Star provided for the purchase of meats for this cause, last Wednesday, five of our team members joined the pantry to distribute the recent shipment of food at the Afton Readiness Center so that the Alpine, Thayne, and Afton storage centers are able to easily pick up their allotment of items. Additionally, the group hauled 1/4 of that food to the Afton Food Pantry’s stores and helped with dating and organizing food items – a must with all food banks!
Sierra Mitchell of the Afton Food Pantry said, “The volunteers performed the given task plus some. It was a lot of work for five team members, and they were absolutely amazing throughout the day.”
The Afton Food Pantry feels like they’re in a good position to continue to help the community throughout the year. If you’d like to help ensure that’s possible at any of our area food banks, donate! When selecting a donation, just share some of the items that you eat most often. It’s that easy.
