Meet the Team: Interview with Heath Jensen
Silver Star is very fortunate to have a team of unique and talented individuals that work whole-heartedly to contribute to the success of our company. Without them working diligently, both behind-the-scenes and first-hand with our customers, we would not be able to meet our rural communities’ technology and communications needs.
Needless to say, we are very proud of our team- and why should we keep them all to ourselves?! We shouldn’t! So, every few weeks, we would like to introduce to you to a member of our team by sharing a short interview-style member profile.
We hope that you enjoy meeting our team as much as we enjoy working with them!
And away we go…..
Meet Heath Jensen!
How long have you worked for Silver Star?
I began my career at Silver Star as a Customer Service Supervisor in March, 2001. Since then, I have had the following positions: Installation & Repair Technician, Central Office Installer, Central Office Technician, Operations Supervisor, Gold Star Sr. Network Technician and now my current position as a Network Technician II. Silver Star has been great to me and has offered many opportunities to grow and learn.
What do you love most about your job?
This is a double-edged sword. I love the complexity of our Network and how resilient it is due to the topology, hardware and routing protocols we use. These same traits also make it very frustrating to install, maintain and learn. I learn something cool every week in this position. Achieving Cisco certification (Cisco Certified Entry Technician, CCENT) has certainly accelerated my learning and I am looking forward to getting my CCNA.
(Cisco certifications at any level are highly regarded in the industry and relatively rare. Cisco certification is required as a Network Technician II at Silver Star.)
What do you love most about living in Star Valley?
I love the small town atmosphere, where you can meet friends at any store, or even along the roadside. The sense of community is strong here and it is great to be surrounded by family and friends.
What is something unique about you?
Every day since February 20th 2003 is a bonus for me. Altitude sickness almost killed me while trying to climb Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina. I made it back to basecamp and purchased oxygen to stay alive long enough to make arrangements for my body to be flown back home. Luckily with the help of the oxygen, dexamethasone and good friends, I made it off the mountain alive. I don’t climb internationally anymore.
What’s your favorite hobby?
I live to ski. On the weekends, I ski lift-served runs with my family. Nights after work, I ski solo back-country by headlamp. I have taught my children and wife to ski and snowboard. They are all very accomplished skiers/boarders now. We love to take ski vacations and make fantastic memories. It is rewarding to have my kids on advanced runs, ripping it up and turning heads. They make me proud. I have a collection of skis that resembles a hoarding complex.
Fast Five – 5 questions fast!
What is your favorite summer activity?
Backpacking and climbing with my family. I took the cover photo for the 2018 – 2019 Silver Star phone book on a backpacking trip to Corral Creek Lake.
(Heath recently won our company photo contest in which his photo was selected for the cover of our 2018-2019 Silver Star phone book, plus he received a $50 gift card!)
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Alaska to hunt Wolves & Bears
What was your favorite movie growing up?
Are you a morning or night person?
Definitely a night person.
Chocolate or vanilla?
Chocolate, unless it is fudge or ice cream.
Thank you for all you do, Heath!
