Now that your kids are getting older, are they insisting on trick-or-treating without you? As a parent, the thought of them out there alone, in the dark, and vulnerable can leave you biting your nails!

Relax! We have some tips & tricks to help keep your little ghouls stay safe while on the prowl for treats…using just their smartphone!

First, the tips!

Before sending them out into the night, you could ask your kids to check in regularly via text or messenger…you might even set some alarms on their phone so they don’t forget. However, we suggest you take things a step further and download or enable a tracking app on your kids’ smartphones so that you can see where they are at all times.

Apple and Android both have free apps that enable you to track their device on a map.

For Apple, the app is built-in and just needs to be enabled. Here’s how….

How to turn on Find My iPhone for your iPhone or iPad

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on your Apple ID at the top.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Scroll down and tap Find My iPhone.
  5. Tap the switch to enable it.

For Android, you will need to download Find My Device. Here’s how...

How to install Find My Device for Android

  1. Open Play Store from your home screen or app drawer.
  2. Search for Find My Device.
  3. Tap the three dots next to the first search result and select Install

There are other third-party apps available for download if you choose. Life360 is a very popular location-sharing app that offers real-time locations, via GPS, for family members.  You can even set up the service to receive alerts when kids arrive home. (This app is also excellent for keeping track of teenagers that drive and family members on road trips!)

Now for the trick…..

Most smartphones feature built-in flashlights that use the device’s camera flash – this can be handy in a pinch if their flashlight breaks or batteries die. Make sure the app is installed and they know how to turn it on. If their device does not have the feature built-in, both the Apple and Android app stores offer flashlight apps.

Happy Halloween!
