Coding Grant awarded to Osmond Elementary

Media Release: Osmond Elementary receives $5k grant for “tangible” coding

For Immediate Release

December 10, Thayne, Wyoming – Osmond Elementary recently learned that it is one of 20 grant recipients nationwide to receive funding from the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS).

Melissa Cranney, the Technology Specialist at Osmond Elementary School, was delighted to learn about her successful application. “We are so excited to receive this FRS grant!  With these funds, we will be able to purchase robots that the students will be able to code, interact and learn from. One of the biggest benefits is we will be able to purchase enough robots that our group sizes in our coding makerspace will go from 4-5 students to 1-2 students in each group. With smaller group sizes everyone wins because students have more hands-on (not just observing) opportunities to learn, experiment, and problem-solve together.”

FRS seeks to support high quality of life in rural America through its annual Community Grants Program. Applicants submit their grant proposal through NTCA Rural Broadband Association member companies, who are responsible for a 10% match. In this case, Silver Star is donating $500 to Osmond Elementary School in addition to the $4,500 from FRS to total $5,000. This is the maximum grant amount offered through the program, which awards grants in four categories: business and economic development, community development, education, and telecommunications applications. The successful Osmond grant was in the education category.

“It is amazing to see the innovation and commitment to hands-on technology education at Osmond Elementary,” said Silver Star Director of Marketing & Public Relations, Eric Gewiss. “We were delighted to support this grant application.”

“Silver Star is such an amazing community partner in helping us create more possibilities for students to learn about how technologies touch our lives daily,” said Cranney.
