teton valley news teton valley star valley news star valley silver star news jackson news jackson featured Community BlogWith winter settled in, those thermostats are turning on. Save a few dollars by following these tips to keep your house warm.

  • Turn down your thermostat to 68 degrees. For every degree you lower your heat in the 60-degree to 70-degree range, you’ll save up to 5 percent on heating costs. Wear warm clothing like a sweater and set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower during the day and evening, health permitting. Set the thermostat back to 55 degrees or off at night or when leaving home for an extended time, saving 5-20 percent of your heating costs.
  • Get a humidifier to add moisture to the air. The air inside your home can be very dry and moister air feels warmer. A humidifier can help you feel comfortable even though your thermostat is set at a lower temperature.
  • Weatherstrip and caulk windows and doors. Check window frames and doors for cracks and fill them with caulk that contains silicon. Putty-like “rope caulk” can help seal large cracks and save you up to 5 percent on your energy bill.

Do you have any other useful tips you use for heating or keeping your house warm during the cold season? Tell us about them in the comments below! Every tip until Monday, December 5, will be entered to win two tickets to Grand Targhee Resort. Stay warm!

Here are some unconventional ways to save:

-Invest in window coverings- close everything up on cloudy days and at night, open on sunny days to reap the warmth of the sun.

-Buy or make a draft tube for the space between the door and the floor. It can be as easy as filling up a tube sock with dry beans or rice. Works well for both interior and exterior doors.

-Use the oven-Yum! Plan meals around using the oven or do more baking in the winter.

Stay warm this year!

Get your furnace checked and put some wool socks on your feet.
